Gas-Rig Worker Injured in NY Construction-Related Accident

An unidentified gas-drilling rig worker was injured on April 13 in Binghamton, NY after he was struck by a section of pipe that may have broken away from a piece of lifting equipment. N.J. Man Electrocuted, Bucks Man Hurt at Site

A Trenton, NJ man was electrocuted on March 25 as he and a co-worker were wrapping up roofing and siding work at a Delran apartment complex. According to this article on Philly.com, the 52-year-old man was pronounced dead shortly after being shocked by a power line.

His co-worker suffered electrical burns. Both men were working on building 17 of the Hunters Glen Apartments on Route 130 when a ladder touched overhead wires.

On April 14, a maintenance worker was hospitalized after a fire at a department store in a mall outside Reading, PA. On March 31, a worker at a Jersey City recycling yard got his hand caught in a conveyor and apparently suffered broken bones.

According to this article on nj.com, the accident happened at Galaxy Recycling on New York Avenue near the Hoboken border and found the 41-year-old Lafayette Street man on the ground and holding his left arm.

The plant manager said the worker was trying to clear a conveyor when his hand got caught.

Small Propane Explosion Injures Arizona School Worker

According to this article on www.azcentral.com, a cafeteria worker at Hillcrest Middle School in Glendale, AZ was taken to the hospital with minor burn injuries on April 8.

29 West Virginia Coal Miners Dead after Explosion

A deadly explosion in a West Virginia coal mine claimed 29 lives - the worst U.S. mining disaster in a generation. According to this article on Philly.com, the death toll makes it the worst U.S. coal mining disaster since a 1970 explosion killed 38 in Hyden, Kentucky.

Drag Racing Cars Hit and Kill Teen

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash on April 6 with two cars that were drag racing. According to this article on Delcotimes.com, detectives believe that the two cars were street racing on Route 273 in Delaware.

SUV Rolls Down NY Driveway, Kills Woman Gardening

On April 7, an empty SVU rolled down a driveway, crossed the road and struck a woman who was gardening in her upstate New York front yard. She was killed by the SUV. Honda Recalling 410,000 Minivans, Small Trucks

Honda Motor Co. is recalling more than 410,000 Odyssey minivans and Element small trucks because of braking-system problems that could make it tougher to stop the vehicle if not repaired. According to this Associated Press article on Philly.com, the recall includes 344,000 Odysseys and 68,000 Elements from the 2007 and 2008 model years.

Honda said that over time brake pedals can feel “soft” and must be pressed closer to the floor to stop the vehicles. If they are left unrepaired, the problem could cause loss of braking power and possibly a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported three crashes due to the problem with minor injuries and no deaths.

Girl Killed in Montco Hit-Run Collision

A suburban Philadelphia teenager died after a hit-and-run crash on March 28 outside her high school.

3 Phoenix Motorcycle Riders Killed in Truck Crash

On March 25, a dump truck plowed into a group of eight motorcycles stopped at a red light in Phoenix, AZ, killing three riders, injuring six. According this article, the eight motorcycles, carrying at least nine people, had pulled up behind a pickup and a small SUV at the light when the truck driver rammed them from behind. The truck ran over the motorcyclists and continued into the SUV.

Some of the motorcycles burst into flames under the dump truck, while others ended up scattered behind the truck.

The article reported that the 50-year-old truck driver was not impaired.

Several motorcycles wedged underneath the garbage truck, which caught fire.

California Baseball League Bans Metal Bats

A 16-year-old pitcher playing for the Marin County Athletic League in California was hit by a line drive and suffered a brain injury. According to this article, the League is now banning the use metal bats at high school games. They will require its 10 teams to use wooden bats.

The article reported that advocates of the ban believe that metal bats allow the players to hit the ball harder, reducing a player’s reaction time.

The teenage player has been in critical condition since getting struck in the head by a line drive during practice in mid March. Part of his skull had to be removed to relieve brain swelling.

Worker Injured in Trench Collapse

A 47-year-old worker from Winsted, CT was injured on March 17 when a section of a pipe trench collapsed on him. According to this article on CTPost.com, the worker suffered leg and back injuries and was transported to the Bridgeport Hospital trauma unit.

The soil shifted and part of the protective trench box buckled and gave way, burying the worker’s legs and pinning him against an excavator arm.

The man is an employee of K&W Construction Co. of Southbury, CT a subcontractor on a $37 million project. He was leveling the bottom of a 10-foot-deep trench so that concrete pipe could be installed in it.

The worker received advanced life support from paramedics and then was lifted out of the trench in a basket and brought to the hospital.

Boy Killed by School Bus in Minnesota

A 6-year-old boy died after being hit by a school bus on March 22 in the Pine River, Minnesota. According to this article, the boy was struck after being let off the bus.

Authorities are still investigating how the accident happened.
