Tragic NY Double-Decker Megabus Accident Kills 4 Outside of Syracuse after Leaving Pennsylvania

A tragic bus crash occurred on Friday night, which killed 4 people and injured 24 others. According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the double-decker Megabus was en route to Syracuse from Philadelphia and was scheduled to make stops in Buffalo and then travel onto Toronto. The bus driver allegedly got lost and turned onto an unfamiliar road, crashing into an over head bridge 10 feet, 9 inches off the ground. The Megabus measured 13 feet high and the roof shredded on impact, then flipped the bus on its side. The four people who lost their lives as well as the five who were most seriously injured were seated on the upper level of the vehicle.

One of the four deceased victims was a 19-year old Kansas man who was attending college in Philadelphia. The other three victims were an 18 year old girl, a 35 year old reverend from Malaysia, and 39 year old woman from India. According to the article, there were signs placed around the bridge to let drivers know the height restrictions, some of which were flashing. The 59-year old Megabus driver said that he did not see the signs as he was looking at his GPS. Police investigators do not suspect that drugs or alcohol contributed to this double-decker bus crash.

Commercial bus accidents are a fairly uncommon occurrence, but, when they do happen, the end result can be catastrophic. Because of the size and lack of safety restraints in some of these buses, passengers involved in bus accidents can suffer serious injury and even death. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), in 2008, 307 fatalities were reported in bus accidents in the United States.

Injured victims of bus accidents have legal rights and may be entitled to compensation if it’s found that their injuries were sustained due to someone else’s negligence. Compensation can be recovered for damages such as medical bills, loss of wages, funeral expenses in the event of a death, and other damages.
