Chester, PA Police Officer Struck by Car in Pedestrian Accident
Philly.com reports that a Chester police officer was struck by a car on Thanksgiving night while directing traffic around a traffic accident. He was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his head, neck, and back.
On average, one police officer is killed every month while conducting a traffic stop or helping a disabled motorist. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports that the number of workers struck by cars has been rising over the past decade. Transportation incidents where a worker was killed accounted for approximately two-fifths of all the workplace fatalities in 2008. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that there were 2,053 total transportation-related fatalities, 322 of which involved a worker being struck and killed by a vehicle while on the job.
If you have been injured while at work, you would be well advised to consult with an experienced workers’ compensation attorney. Those injured on the job in Pennsylvania are entitled to file a workers’ compensation claim. That right extends regardless of who is at fault for the injury or how large or small your employer may be. Workers’ comp benefits can cover the costs of your medical expenses and replace lost wages if you aren’t able to work for a while. When a third party -- a company or person that you don’t directly work for -- is responsible for the injury, you may still file a workplace injury lawsuit while collecting workers’ compensation.
