Air Bags Deploying Without Warning: Ford Announces Recall of F-150 Pickup Trucks
Ford Motor Co. is recalling nearly 150,000 F-150 pickup trucks from model years 2005-2006 in the United States and Canada due to the potential risk of air bags deploying accidentally and without warning. MSNBC reports that government pressure led to the recall since the automaker considered the air bag problem posed a “relatively low risk”.
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reportedly investigating whether Ford needs to expand their recall. The government advised Ford to recall 1.3 million F-150s from the 2004-2006 model years after receiving reports of 98 injuries due to accidental air bag deployment. Some of the most common and known injuries caused by Ford air bags deploying unexpectedly include minor cuts, back and neck pain, burns from contact with the air bag, and bruising. Two vehicle occupants have reportedly suffered broken or chipped teeth and two reported fractures of the elbow or arm.
There is no doubt that this recall will be closely observed and evaluated since Ford’s F-Series pickup truck is one of the most popular vehicles in the U.S. The recall is planned to launch in early March and consumers should be receiving notices about getting their vehicle repaired.
Vehicle recalls help spread awareness of potential safety flaws that could inflict harm upon vehicle occupants. However, far too often, auto recalls are announced too late for those who have already suffered injury.
